Keep your home and family safe by practicing fire safety. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of all home fires, followed by heating equipment, and an electrical malfunction.
Cooking Fires
- Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling food. Never leave food unattended!
- Use a timer to remind yourself that you are cooking.
- Keep the stovetop, burners and oven clean from grease and debris.
- Never use your oven for storage.
- Never pour water on a grease fire! Cover the pan with a lid and turn off the stove.
Heating Equipment
- Keep anything that can burn at least three feet from all heat sources.
- Hire a professional to clean, inspect and service your home’s heating equipment annually.
- Purchase space heaters that have an automatic shut off and plug them directly into an outlet.
- Turn off space heaters before leaving the room or going to sleep.
Electrical Equipment
- Hire a qualified electrician to make any changes in your home.
- Do not overload electrical outlets and unplug small appliances when they are not in use.
- Use surge protectors, not power strips, with electrical devices that require a lot of electricity.
- Make sure power cords do not run under doorways or carpets where they could be damaged.
- Replace cords that are cracked, damaged, or loose immediately.
Fire Extinguishers
- Fire extinguishers are helpful to put out small fires.
- Multipurpose (ABC) extinguishers are recommended for use in the home.
- Always call 9-1-1 and make sure you have a clear exit route before using an extinguisher.
- To use a fire extinguisher, remember P.A.S.S.

- Aim at the base of the fire
- Squeeze the lever
- Sweep from side-to-side
