Safety Tips for Kids

Keep children safe by teaching them basic safety tips so they know what to do if there is an emergency.

  • Stay away from matches, candles, and anything that can burn. These are tools, not toys.
  • Stop, drop, and roll if your clothes catch on fire.
  • When the smoke alarm sounds, crawl low and get out of the house.
  • Use the back of your hand to check if the doors are hot before opening.
  • Closed your bedroom door before you go to bed at night.
  • Firefighters are friends and helpers. Never hide from a firefighter.
  • Call 9-1-1 in an emergency.
  • Know your address and phone number if there is an emergency.
  • In an earthquake, drop to the ground, cover your head and neck and hold on.
  • Make a disaster supply kit with your family with basic needs for at least 3 days.
  • Make and practice home escape plans so you know how to get out of the house and where to meet your family in an emergency.
  • Never swim alone.
  • Always enter the water feet first to avoid injuries.
  • Take swim lessons and use a life vest until you can swim on your own.
