Rudy Cruz

Firefighter Paramedic

Rudy Cruz’s journey to becoming an OCFA firefighter is a story of determination, resilience, and the power of mentorship. Born in Mexico City, Rudy’s parents made the brave decision to move the family — including Rudy and his two brothers — to Santa Ana, where they still reside today.

Rudy realized his calling to the fire service after using his Boy Scout training to assist at a traffic collision and witnessing the care and professionalism of the firefighters on scene. Inspired, he pursued fire technology classes at Santa Ana College and found guidance and mentorship from local firefighters. Rudy began his career as an OCFA handcrew firefighter, proudly serving for six years, before being hired as a firefighter trainee in 2016.

Though he faced a setback when he did not pass probation initially, Rudy’s mentors encouraged him to keep going. With determination and relentless effort, he trained, tested again, and succeeded, eventually becoming a firefighter paramedic.

Rudy’s heart is devoted to his family — his wife and two children — and he treasures the time they spend together exploring the outdoors, including hiking trips in Montana searching for wolves. He also enjoys photography, painting, and drawing, and he never misses an opportunity to enjoy his favorite family recipes, including his mother’s famous sopes and green salsa.

Reflecting on his journey, Rudy expresses gratitude for the sacrifices of his parents, the unwavering support of his family, and the camaraderie of his fellow handcrew firefighters. His advice to others pursuing their own paths is simple: “Always be grateful. Always be humble. Be humble enough to help others.”

Rudy Cruz’s perseverance and dedication serve as a reminder that comebacks can be stronger than setbacks, inspiring everyone around him.
