Kristen Gates
With over two decades of Emergency Department experience, Kristen brings exceptional clinical expertise and a passion for supporting first responders to her role as an OCFA Nurse Educator. She joined OCFA in August 2024, encouraged by her longtime friend and fellow nurse Jamie, along with Chief Schuetz.
“Working in the ER gave me a strong appreciation for prehospital care. This role lets me continue supporting those frontline teams in a whole new way.”
Kristen’s nursing journey began when a close friend from a family of nurses inspired her to explore the field. She quickly discovered it was the perfect fit for her desire to help others. Over 22 years in the ER, she’s collected countless powerful moments—some joyful, many heartbreaking.
“It’s not just one memory, but a collection of moments—crying with families after tragic losses, seeing the strength in people’s worst hours—it stays with you.”
Though new to the fire service, Kristen has embraced OCFA’s culture and the relationship-based nature of the role.
“Being a nurse here is different from any other nursing I’ve done. So much depends on understanding the unique challenges crews face in the field.”
Fun facts: Kristen has an identical twin, has visited 17 countries, and—with her husband—restored a 1950s Airstream trailer they love to travel in.
