Katya O’Neill

Firefighter

Katya O’Neill is a firefighter with the Orange County Fire Authority, proudly serving the community of San Clemente at Station 60. Born in Donetsk, Ukraine, Katya eventually made her home in the United States and began her fire service journey as an OCFA Reserve Firefighter in San Juan Capistrano.

Even before officially entering the fire service, Katya’s instinct to help others was already part of who she was. Once, she stopped to aid a construction worker pinned between two vehicles and suffering from severe bleeding. Thinking quickly, she fashioned field tourniquets out of reflective vests and metal rods to stop the bleeding — a selfless act that saved his life. The patient’s family later invited her to the hospital to thank her personally, gifting her an angel wings necklace. In a touching tribute, the couple even named their newborn daughter Katya.

Katya embraces every aspect of the fire service — from the camaraderie and support of her “fire family” to the joy of making someone’s day better. She recalls fond memories of creative station workouts, including a hacky sack fitness challenge that involved 20 push-ups every time the ball hit the ground. “All push-ups and laughing,” she says.

Outside the station, Katya enjoys staying active through beach volleyball, surfing, free diving, and even metal detecting. With most of her family still in Ukraine, she finds deep meaning in the bonds she’s built through the fire service.

Katya’s message to others reflects the resilience and positivity that define her: “No matter what, don’t give up. The rough times are there to build you as a person; learn from them. Have courage and be kind. Also, a smile goes a long way.”

Katya recently achieved a major milestone in her career by completing probation and receiving her helmet shield. Her dedication, courage, and heart make her an inspiration to those around her and a valued member of OCFA and the communities we serve.
