Jorge Vargas
Captain Jorge Vargas has built a career rooted in teamwork, perseverance, and a genuine desire to make a difference. He lives in Rancho Santa Margarita with his wife and their young daughter, and when he’s not chasing after his little one, you can often find him exploring Orange County’s trails on his mountain bike or enjoying other outdoor adventures.
Jorge’s fire service journey has truly come full circle. He first joined OCFA as a Paid Call Firefighter in 1997 before being hired by the Santa Ana Fire Department in 2000. When Santa Ana’s fire services were integrated into OCFA in 2012, Jorge returned to the organization where his career began — bringing with him a wealth of experience and a deep passion for serving the community. Over the years, he has served in a variety of roles, including as one of OCFA’s highly trained arson investigators, and has proudly held the rank of captain for several years.
For Jorge, the fire service offered everything he loved about playing team sports growing up — the camaraderie, shared purpose, and the challenge of pushing himself both mentally and physically. “I enjoy the team aspect and camaraderie the fire service offers,” he says. “I like the mental and physical challenges, which incentivize taking care of your body and staying mentally fit. I also like making a positive impact in people’s lives.”
When asked about his favorite assignment, Jorge points to Station 71 in Santa Ana — a place that holds special meaning in his career. And for those just beginning their journey in the fire service, his advice is simple but powerful: “Stay humble and take care of yourself physically and mentally.”
Captain Vargas’s dedication to the profession, his love for teamwork, and his commitment to serving others make him an integral part of the OCFA family and a valued member of the communities he protects.
